Solana is getting stronger with Quantum Security and Phantom Wallet Innovation


Solana is pushing blockchain innovation with its quantum-proof Winternitz Vault, designed to protect assets from future quantum threats.

In addition, the Phantom wallet is focused on improving the user experience, simplifying token discovery and strengthening the Solana ecosystem.

Solana presents the Quantum-Resistant Vault

Winternitz Vault is a quantum-proof solution to protect blockchain users from emerging quantum computing threats.

Winternitz One-Time Signatures (WOTS) are used in this cryptographic vault to ensure that funds are safe even from a quantum attack.

The feature is designed to address a critical blockchain vulnerability. By signing transactions, users expose their public keys. This makes them vulnerable to reverse engineering of their private keys by attackers.

The Treasury further reduces its risk of compromise by generating new cryptographic keys for each transaction.

This comes as an option. Users can opt for quantum-proof security of their assets without the need for network upgrades.

How quantum resistance works

Traditional cryptographic systems face a serious threat from quantum computing. In theory, powerful quantum computers could use this to crack encryption.

They can create private keys from public keys spilled this way. This, of course, would put digital assets at even greater risk.

In response, Solan’s Winternitz vault generates 32 private scalars, each hashing 256 times. It only stores the final hash as a public key.

When the transaction is complete, the vault is closed and a new set of keys is generated. It is almost impossible for an attacker to hack and compromise previously exposed keys.

This experience is similar to having just a new credit card for each transaction, protecting yourself from any one transaction jeopardizing the others.

Solana was a pioneer in the implementation of technology. However, it grew out of decades of cryptographic research, and Lamport was a key inspiration in the creation of WOTS.

As developer Dean Little noted, “I found it ironic that we were using Lamport’s work to secure Lamport.”

A growing trend in blockchain

Solana’s security innovation is part of a broader move in the blockchain space. Since Google announced quantum supremacy in 2019, the point at which a quantum computer has completed calculations that would take classical computers more than 10,000 years, quantum-resistant cryptography has been in increasing focus.

Other notable quantum proof-of-concept projects like Praxxis, started by cryptography pioneer David Chaum, and QAN also include quantum-proof features.

Praxxis aims to solve scalability and privacy issues while being quantum resilient. QAN claims to offer ‘quantum hardness’ in its beta phase.

As quantum computing power grows, potentially at a double-exponential rate according to Neven’s Law, the chain’s developers are already taking their own precautions to secure their network.

The role of the phantom wallet in Solana’s ecosystem

Solana’s advancements in security have also been at the fore in the user experience it provides to its users. Phantom simplifies the discovery of new tokens and applications to help users discover the Solana ecosystem.

Phantom clarified that while it cares about usability and accessibility, it has no plans to launch a token.

Despite this, Phantom continued to enjoy great success, rising above Coinbase in the US App Store rankings at one point.
