Cyclone Chido kills 94 in Mozambique

In Mozambique, the storm hit northern provinces that are regularly hit by cyclones. He first reached Cabo Delgado and then went further inland to Niassa and Nampula.

The national INGD said the cyclone affected the education and health sectors. More than 109,793 students were affected, and school infrastructure was severely damaged.

About 52 sanitation units were damaged, INGD said, further jeopardizing access to basic health services. This was further exacerbated in areas where access to health facilities was already limited prior to the cyclone.

Daniel Chapo, head of Mozambique’s ruling party, told local media that the government was mobilizing support at “all levels” in response to the cyclone.

Speaking during a visit to Cabo Delgado on Sunday, one of the hardest hit areas, Chapo said the government is working together with INGD to ensure that those affected in the provinces of Mecúfi, Nampula, Memba and Niassa can rebuild.
