The Social Security Administration has confirmed several changes to the new Social Security benefits that will take effect from January 1, 2025. These changes include an increase in the full retirement age, an increase in the monthly benefit amount due to the newly announced cost of living adjustment (COLA) of 2.5%.
The most important change of all are the changes to the SSI payment schedule. The main goal of the payment schedule changes is to provide financial assistance to SSI recipients earlier, especially when normal payment dates fall on weekends or holidays, such as February 2025, individuals can expect to receive their SSI payment on January 31, 2025 .
In the United States, the Social Security Administration (SSA) recently unveiled important changes to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment schedule for 2025 that may affect more than 70 million claimants. The announced changes are basically designed to distribute benefit payments in a timely manner with a new cost of living adjustment (COLA) of 2.5%.
The new payment schedule may provide an earlier increase in benefits to eligible retirees, people with disabilities, and a few other people living in the United States. For example, the SSI payment for February will be delivered on 31 January 2025, while the payment for March will be made on 28 February 2025.
As in May 2025, SSI beneficiaries will be able to receive two payments, the first on May 1, 2025 while the second SSI payment will be paid on May 30, 2025. This is because June 1, 2025 will fall on a weekend.
These changes are part of a broader effort by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to alleviate unexpected delays that can disrupt financial planning for qualified individuals, especially when monthly benefit payment dates fall on weekends or public holidays.
As we know, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is usually paid on the 1st of the month, but if it falls on a weekend or holiday, this benefit amount will be delivered to all eligible claimants the previous business day. The same thing will happen to SSI payments to SSI recipients for January 2025. January 1, 2025 is New Year’s Day, which is considered a federal holiday in the United States.
Eligible individuals will receive their January 2025 SSI payment on December 31, 2024. Under the Social Security Administration’s revised 2025 payment schedule, people with disabilities, retirees, survivors, and SSI recipients will receive their monthly benefits on payment dates below.
Monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment amounts will increase due to cost-of-living increases announced by the Social Security Administration. Individuals will be able to receive an SSI payment with a maximum increase of 2.5% of their January 2025 SSI benefit payment.
The exact amount of the payment depends on individual circumstances such as the type of disability, income limitation, total number of children. Average monthly SSI payments for 2025 are listed in the table below.
| Submission status | Average monthly SSI payment |
| Individuals | 967 dollars |
| Married couples | 1450 dollars |
| An important person | 484 dollars |
