New public holidays could be planned for 2025

The UK could get extra public holidays in 2025 as the country marks two major anniversaries, reports suggest.

The Daily Express reports that the Government has not yet decided which weekend will be extended to four days, but they say that the announcement of the plans will come at some point.

2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, which falls on May 5.

As part of the commemorations, millions of people will remember the moment when the Allies accepted the unconditional capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945.

While August 15, 2025 will also mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day, when the effective end of global hostilities took effect in 1945.

Two anniversaries mark opportunities for extra time off to celebrate, and the announcement of an extra public holiday could be imminent.
