What makes you eligible to receive VA payments?
Veterans who meet the veterans’ disability benefits criteria below may qualify for VA disability benefits:
- First, you must meet the following two criteria:
- You have served either active duty for training, active duty or inactive training, and
- You are currently suffering from an illness or injury that affects your body or mind.
- You must now meet at least the following eligibility criteria to receive VA payments:
- You can apply for service disability if you became ill or injured while serving in the military and you can relate that condition to your illness or injury, or
- You filed for pre-service disability because you were sick or injured before you joined the military and your service made the condition worse, or
- You filed for post-service disability benefits because you had a disability from your active duty that did not become apparent until after you left the military.
- Veterans who meet the following conditions automatically receive VA disability payments:
- When you have some presumed conditions that do not need to be proven, the administration automatically awards you VA disability benefits.
- Presumptive conditions are a chronic illness that manifests itself only after one year of military retirement, an illness or injury that occurred while you were a prisoner of war, or an illness that occurred when you came into contact with hazardous materials.

Supporting Evidence to Claim VA Payments
Veterans who wish to claim VA disability benefits must submit the following evidence and documents in order to claim disability benefits:
- Your VA medical records related to your current medical or physical conditions that worsened after your services,
- If you have private medical reports or records, you can also present them to claim VA disability,
