An explosion was heard in the capital of Ukraine

A loud explosion was heard in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Saturday, as authorities warned of incoming ballistic missiles.

The air raid warning had just ended when sounds were heard across the city at 5:50 am local time. Seconds later, the little boy started wailing.

The country’s air defense system was activated, the mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on Telegram, warning of the threat of missiles and urging residents to stay in shelters.

A short time later, he said, the emergency services had arrived at the scene. The city’s military administration said four people were killed.

Both sides in the nearly three-year war, which began with an all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, have stepped up their attacks in recent weeks.
