Atletico Madrid were punished for the racist behavior of fans at Arsenal

NYON, Switzerland – Atletico Madrid were fined and placed on probation by UEFA on Thursday as punishment for racist behavior by fans in their Champions League game against Arsenal.

Atletico were accused of “racist and/or discriminatory behavior” for fans making monkey noises and Nazi salutes during a 4-0 loss in London last month.

Atletico fans have already targeted Real Madrid forward Venezia Jr., who is black, with similar racism.

UEFA fined Atletico 30,000 euros ($48,580) and ordered a one-match ban for selling tickets to fans for a European away game, which was suspended for a year’s probation.

Atletico must also pay 10,000 euros ($16,193) for fans to throw objects at Arsenal’s stadium.
