Australian influence accused of poisoning babies for money

“(There are) no words for how horrific an offense of this nature is,” Queensland Police Det Insp Paul Dalton told reporters on Thursday.

Between August and October, detectives say that the woman – from the Sunshine Coast – gave the child several prescriptions at the pharmacy, without approval.

He went on to obtain illegal drugs and cover up his actions, they said, including using leftover drugs on different people in his home.

Police began investigating on October 15, when the baby was brought to the hospital suffering from “severe emotional and physical distress and harm”. A test for the illegal drug produced a positive result in January, he said.

The woman raised A$60,000 (£30,500; $37,300) through a GoFundMe donation – which the site is trying to pay back, Det Insp Dalton said.

Police were investigating other people over the alleged abuse, but there was no evidence to charge anyone, he added.

The woman will face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
