Blizzard seeks approval to wear Nordiques jersey in Montreal

Quebec’s battle may make a long-awaited return later this season.

In their showdown against the Montreal Canadiens on January 29, 2026, the Colorado Avalanche may be allowed to wear their blue Quebec Nordiques retro jerseys while the Habs wear their iconic red uniforms, SportsNet’s Eric Engels reported Monday from the NHL Board of Governors meeting.

The Avalanche brought back the jerseys as a celebration of the franchise’s 30th season and are set to wear them for seven games this year. They requested approval from the NHL to wear them for the eighth time for their meeting in Montreal.

Canadiens CEO Jeff Molson said he hasn’t been asked by the league yet, but would gladly approve if they do.

He wore the Colorado jersey when the Avs hosted the Habs on November 29 and against the Carolina Hurricanes on October 23. The Hurricanes wore a throwback Hartford Whalers sweater for the showdown.

Here’s a complete list of the rest of the games in which the Ice Bears have worn Nordiques jerseys:

• Jan. 3, 2026, at Carolina Hurricanes
• Jan. 12, 2026, vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
• January 29, 2026, at Montreal Canadiens (if approved)
• March 16, 2026, vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
• April 1, 2026, vs. Vancouver Canucks
• April 11, 2026, vs. Vegas Golden Knights
