Canadian speed skater Sarolt captured gold at the Dundee World Tour

Canadian speed skaters Courtney Sarlatt and William Dungeon won the gold medals at the Short Track World Tour stop in Dordrecht, Netherlands, on Saturday.

Charlotte of Moncton made a long pass on Dutch speedster Xandra Velzeboer with four laps remaining to take the top spot in the women’s 1,000m final.

Dundejno of Montreal and Canadian teammate Felix Roussel of Sherbrooke, Ky., finished one-two in the men’s 1,500 meters.

Dundee’s silver medal in the 500 meters helped him win the overall World Tour title at the distance.

The 24-year-old crossed the line third, but was upgraded when team-mate Steven Dubois of Lachine, Co., was penalized for pushing into competition with Pietro Segal, which caused the Italian to crash into the safety mat.

Sarolt’s win was his third of the season in Montreal after back-to-back wins in Gdansk, Poland, last week before silver.

“I’m very happy about my race,” he said. “I had some doubts yesterday, but I woke up today and focused on what I could control and also on having some fun, and it paid off.”

Dandgeno took the lead in the 1,500 when he passed Dutch leader Jens van T Voot with four laps to go.

The Dutchman was forced into the straightaway during the pass, which caused him to lose enough speed to jump Russell for second.

“I’m very happy to share the podium with Felix today in the 1,500, in an atmosphere with an incredible crowd here in Dordrecht,” said Dundejno. “I’m also happy with my 500. It was a bit more strategic race.

“Many lessons were learned for me and the team as a whole during this day of competition.”

Roussel, 24, reached the podium for the first time this season.

“There’s no better feeling than having two Canadians on top of the podium,” Russell said. “Sharing the podium with William is always special.

“It was definitely emotional. That’s the word that best describes how I felt after the final. It was a really tough season. I needed to find my bearings at the international level.”

It was the last of four World Tour events before February’s Olympic Games in Dordrecht, Milan and Cortina, Italy.

Racing concludes on Sunday with the men’s relay and 1,000 meters, the women’s 500 and 1,500, and the medley relay.

The crystal globes that go to the men’s and women’s overall season leaders, currently held by Dundee and Charlotte, will be awarded on Sunday.
