A fire burns at night at a power plant beside two tall chimneys

Drone footage shows a fire at one of the world’s largest battery factories

A fire has broken out at a California power plant that houses one of the world’s largest battery energy storage facilities.

The fire started in a building containing lithium-ion batteries on Thursday afternoon, officials at the Monterey County Sheriff’s office said.

The Moss Landing power plant, run by Vistra Corp., was evacuated, as were the people around it. No injuries were reported.

Officials did not actively fight the fire, a Monterey Sheriff’s spokesman said, and instead left the building and batteries burning on the advice of fire experts.
