MIAMI – Former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown walked out of a Miami jail on Thursday, freed on $25,000 bail after pleading not guilty to a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
Brown, 37, hugged attorney Mark Eglerish outside the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami. He carried a bag of groceries as they walked to a nearby food truck, where Brown drank, and then they left in the lawyer’s vehicle.
Circuit Judge Mandy Glazer ordered Brown to wear a GPS ankle monitor as he awaits trial. He faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.
Prosecutors had sought pretrial detention, contending Brown is a high-paid former professional athlete with the means to escape. Eglarish told the judge Wednesday that Brown, who no longer has a passport, is from Broward County, Fla. I will return to my home while the case proceeds.
Brown is accused of grabbing a gun from a security guard after a popular boxing match in Miami on May 16 and firing two shots at a man he had already fought with, according to an arrest warrant. Zulqarneen Kwam Nantambo told investigators that a bullet had hit him in the neck.
Brown’s attorney said Wednesday that the affidavit is false — Brown actually used his personal weapon, and the shots were not aimed at anyone.
Brown spent 12 years in the NFL and was an All-Pro wide receiver who last played for Tampa Bay in 2021. He spent most of his career with Pittsburgh. For his career, Brown has 928 receptions for more than 12,000 yards and 88 total touchdowns, one punt return and one pass.
