Born under a lucky, blessed, benevolent, lucky starThe Edmonton Oilers are all accurate descriptors for a team that put together back-to-back wins this week, first shorthanded by the Columbus Blue Jackets with 58 seconds to play, and then when an offsides challenge negated Travis Connie’s apparent game-winner with 37 seconds to play last night in Philadelphia.
The Oilers won both games in overtime. Both goals by Jack Roslovic.
“Jake has been a great addition to our team,” gushed his head coach, Chris Knobloch. Five-on-five, power play, obviously overtime… we want more speed – I don’t think your lineup has that much speed. He helps with that, and some of the secondary scoring he provides. So we are very, very lucky to have him.

When you play in back-to-back Stanley Cups — when you win nine playoff series in four years — somehow you build some credit with the hockey gods. Don’t ask us why, but that was the way it was for all the good teams in all the years we’ve been around the game.
But if you make your break, as hockey lore would tell us, then it must be said that the Oilers were the better team in Philadelphia, outshooting the Flyers 32-21 in their OT win. Edmonton got their luck, but oh boy, their reward couldn’t have been more than getting off the board for a potential game-winner when video showed that Owen Tippett was clearly a few inches offside.
“It’s a game of inches,” the Oilers head coach said. “They got a goal that was taken offside by just a couple of inches, and we were able to score the overtime goal just because we were offside by two inches.”
In a long season that will see a break both ways, the Edmonton Oilers have taken those two big breaks and cashed in all four points — courtesy of back-to-back Roslovic goals in OT.
Or as the great Darren Duchesne used to say, “Back to back jacks!”

“Well, when it’s an empty net, you don’t really see it one the hole You just see a big hole,” Roslovic said. “The pass was very good, right in my wheelhouse, and it was really difficult for (Vladar), obviously.”
Roslovic became just the second player in Oilers history with consecutive OT goals in consecutive games — joining Andrew Cogliano (three consecutive) in March 2008 — burying a pass from Matt Savoie on a two-man jailbreak in overtime.
Philly hit two shots in the opening 90 seconds of the game, as Edmonton hit the road for seven games in 11 nights, an odyssey that began with the Oilers as the NHL’s 27th-best road team. They play Columbus on Thursday, in a building where they have lost their last four games.
The Oilers haven’t won in Columbus since they beat the Blue Jackets 4-1 in October 2019.
Oil spills — Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (undisclosed injury) did not travel with the team … Edmonton’s all-time record against the Flyers is surprisingly even at 39 wins, 40 goals, 8 ties … The Oilers are the worst five-on-five team in the league by goal share. But Evan Bouchard’s blast that made it 1-0 late made it five goals at 1-5 … Edmonton entered the game with the 31st-ranked team in save percentage (.862). Unless you’re talking five-on-five. Then it is 32nd (.873).
