Homan bounces back at the Canadian Curling Trials, undefeated Dunstone tops Gushue

Rachel Homan bounced back from a rare setback with a 12-5 win over Selena Stormi in Monday’s afternoon draw at the 2025 Canadian Curling Trials in Montana.

Homan improved to 3-1 in Halifax, returning to his winning ways after an overtime loss to Kyle Scurlock on Sunday ended his 32-game winning streak against Canadian opponents.

The Ottawa team took control of the match against the Edmonton Storm with a five-point third end that gave them an 8-2 lead.

“It’s a short round robin, so you have to be strong every game, and anything in the past, nothing can be changed about that,” Homan said. “You just have to move on and come up with your best game the next day.”

Homan, the two-time defending Canadian and world women’s champion, moved into sole possession of Gimli, the man’s undefeated Carrie Enerson, in the women’s standings.

Anderson improved to 4-0 with a 6-4 win over Winnipeg’s Caitlin Laws.

In other afternoon results, Christina Blake of Halifax won 9-4 over Corinne Brown of Kamloops, B.C., and Scurlock scored twice in the 10th end for a 7-6 win over Kate Cameron of St. Adolph, Maine.

Lawes, Sturmay, Black and Skrlik were part of the logjam at 2-2. Brown fell to 1-3 while Cameron is still chasing his first win at 0-4.

In men’s competition Monday evening, Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone went undefeated at 4-0 with a 9-7 overtime victory over Brad Gusho (3-1), handing St. John’s his first loss.

“It was 11 ends of complete and utter destruction. I thought we controlled the majority of that game,” Dunstone said. “Again, didn’t start with the hammer, we just did what we do. We turned it over right away, you know, broke it in seven, and then Brad took his turn to do what he does, and that’s Brad Gusho late in games, and he kept putting pressure on us.”

Brad Jacobs, the 2014 Olympic champion, and his Calgary squad beat Winnipeg’s Jordan MacDonald 6-3, who is still looking for his first win.

Saskatoon’s Mike McEwen defeated Calgary’s Kevin Coe 9-7 while the teams were tied 2-2, and Saskatoon’s Ryan Claytor improved to 1-3 with a 10-7 win over Toronto’s John Epping (1-3).

Gusho cruised to a 5-3 win over Epping in Monday’s opening draw, stealing a point in the third and sixth ends to take a low-scoring encounter. Gushue’s run also took care of the stone with the trick of not stealing Epping.

Gushue, the 2006 Olympic champion, hopes to represent Canada at the Winter Games once again in his final competitive season. He also led Canada to bronze at the 2022 Olympics.

Dunstone started the day with a 7-3 win over Claytor. Dunstone went up 5-1 after five ends and cruised to victory from there.

In other early draw results, Coe scored three goals in the ninth end in an 8-7 win over McDonald, and Jacobs beat McEwen 6-3.

The winners of the men’s and women’s events in the curling trials will represent Canada at the 2026 Games in Milan and Cretina, Italy.
