Riot police have clashed with protesters in Athens, after thousands of people gathered to demand justice for the victims of Greece’s worst train disaster, which killed 57 people.
In 2023, a passenger carrying 350 people collided with a freight train near the Greek village of Tempi, causing the front carriage to catch fire.
“I don’t have oxygen” was the main slogan of the protest – referring to the discovery that many were killed not by the collision itself, but by fires caused by banned chemicals on the freight train.
The accident led to public condemnation of safety standards on Greek railways, as well as the country’s handling of further investigations.
The video shows police firing tear gas, as protesters throw sticks and other objects at officers.
