According to information on mainland social media, children’s hospitals across China were overwhelmed with large children with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, weakness and dizziness.

On Friday, a Reuters news report said China’s disease control body was implementing a pilot system to track pneumonia of unknown origin. The situation has fueled fears of cases of “white lung” – a term often used to describe the severe symptoms of pneumonia.

Some have claimed that China has declared a state of emergency due to the epidemic, however there has been no official confirmation from either the Chinese government or the World Health Organization.

The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration (NCDPA) released a statement this week and revealed that infections increased significantly from the week of December 16 to 22.

Additionally, an NCDPA spokesperson said the total number of cases this year is lower than in 2024, although respiratory infections are expected to increase during the winter.

On December 27, a doctor in Jiangsu Province announced on the Xiaohongshu mainland platform that a new unknown virus had been found in their hospital.

The doctor claimed that the affected patients suffered from pneumonia and respiratory failure and although the virus was not as contagious as the coronavirus, the death rate was much higher.

According to the doctor, of the 30 patients in the ward for which he was responsible, six had died, and the three remaining patients were about to die.

A woman claims on social media that the main hospitals in Shenyang, the largest city in China’s Liaoning province, have completely collapsed. She also claimed that viruses such as Mycoplasma, Influenza, and Sanyang combined with each other to cause the epidemic.

In addition to these viruses, the HMPV new china virus has also been named as potentially responsible for this outbreak. HMPV is another respiratory virus that can cause pneumonia and bronchitis in severe cases.

The outbreak is of particular concern to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions. People with conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at increased risk.
