Italy defeated Spain to retain the Davis Cup

BOLOGNA, Italy – Italy remains the king of the Davis Cup – and this time Janic Sner didn’t even need it.

Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli both won their singles matches to give the Italians an unbeaten 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final.

It is Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title, and third in a row. The last nation to win three straight titles was the United States, which won five straight from 1968-72.

The second-ranked tennis player, who has led Italy to men’s tennis’ biggest team trophy in the past two years, refused to play this week, preferring instead to prepare for next season.
