Jenner’s four points helped charge the route expansion Goldeneyes

OTTAWA – Ottawa Charge captain Brian Jenner had two goals and two assists in a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Goldeneyes on Wednesday night.

Manon McMahon, Anna Meixner and Rebecca Leslie also scored as Ottawa (1-0-0-1) responded after being shut out 4-0 by the New York Sirens in its season opener.

Rory Gilday and Gabby Hughes had two assists and Gwyneth Phillips scored 18.

Claire Thompson scored the lone goal for Vancouver (0-1-0-1) and former Charge netminder Emerson Maschmeier stopped 30 shots.

The expansion franchise won its first game 4-3 in overtime on Friday over the Seattle Storm.

A strong third period capped off a strong night for Ottawa. Leslie made no mistake in the opening minutes, beating Mitchmeier to give the Charge a 3-0 lead.

Thompson fired a shot that beat Phillips high glove side to make it 3-1, but with 5:22 remaining Anna Meixner grabbed a loose puck and scored through traffic. Jenner added his second, a jailbreak goal, into an empty net.

McMahon extended Ottawa’s lead to second in the middle in his first season. Stephanie Markowski took a clean pass to center and found Hughes, who slid a pass to McMahon at the top of the slot.

Jenner opened the scoring on the power play when Goldeneyes defender Emma Greco took a huge penalty for hitting Ottawa’s Peyton Hamp in the head just two minutes into the game.

Vancouver’s lineup included three former Charge players, including Mashmir, defenseman Ashton Bell and forward Teresa Vanesova.

Anna Shokhina, Ottawa’s second-round pick, made her PWHL debut on Wednesday. Joined by sixth-round pick Fanuza Kadyrova, the pair are the first two players from Russia in PWHL history.

Charge: Getting the first goal allowed Ottawa to play with confidence and set the tone for the game.

Goldeneyes: Vancouver struggled to match Ottawa’s pace and often fell into their own end.

Ottawa took advantage of a huge penalty and scored a power play goal in the first period.
