Mammoth ground Jets to seventh straight win


It was the Mammoth’s seventh straight win as they improved to 8-2.

Utah’s other goals were scored by Michael Carcon and Mikhail Sergachev.

Mark Scheifele, with his eighth of the season, and Dylan DeMelo answered for the Jets, who have won six of their last eight games.

Vitek Vancic stopped 28 shots for the Mammoths, while Connor Hellebeck made 29 saves for Winnipeg (6-3) in front of 13,678 fans at the Canadian Life Centre.

Winnipeg tied the game 2-2 on the power play in the second period. With John Marino booked for interference, Scheiffel took a pass from Josh Morrissey and shot past Vencic. It was Morrissey’s 300th career NHL assist.

Mammoth scored the second goal 64 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead. Carcon finished a 2-on-1 with Keller Yamamoto at 11:07. Hellebuyck had little chance at the game.

Utah tied the game 1-1 on the power play at the 10:03 mark in the middle of the period when Sergachev put a shot past Haleback.

The Jets opened the scoring 45 seconds into the second period. DeMelo’s shot from the point clearly beat Vencic. Kyle Conner had an assist to give him 305 career assists, passing Brian Little for third place in franchise history.

Jets: After a tight first period, the hosts opened the scoring early in the second, then tied it 2-2 late after trailing 2-1. But they were on their heels in the third.

Mammoth: After allowing the first goal of the game, they took a 2-1 lead, which they erased late, setting up the drama of the third period. Then they prevailed in the last round.

Gwinner’s goal was set up by Logan Cooley after JJ Peterka stole the puck from defenseman Hayden Fleury.

It was Gwinner’s seventh point in his last five games.
