Maple Leafs’ Oliver Ekman-Larsson is out early against the Penguins with an injury

The Toronto Maple Leafs played the majority of the last period against the Pittsburgh Penguins without any significant defense.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson exited in the final frame of Saturday night’s contest and did not return. Head coach Craig Berube told reporters after the game that it was confirmed he suffered an upper-body injury.

Berube added that Ekman-Larsson told Maple Leafs winger William Nylander he would be fine, and the coach hopes it’s not serious.

Ekman-Larsson finished the game with a goal and an assist in 13:56 of ice time.

In 24 games this season, the 34-year-old Swede has three goals and 18 assists while averaging 21:03 on the ice.

Ekman-Larsson is in the second year of a four-year, $14 million contract.
