Mayfield misjudges gratitude while marking the return

Like many Americans, Baker Mayfield has plenty of Thanksgiving memories, though not all of them are good.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback recalled a time in college when his father put him and his brother in their place and ruined the November holidays.

“My dad ruined Thanksgiving one day because we had a throwing contest in my grandparents’ backyard and he won. That’s when I was in college,” Mayfield said.

“So it ruined Thanksgiving for me and my brother. It’s a core memory that I still hold dear.”

Mayfield hopes to be healthy enough to create some better Thanksgiving memories this year starting for the Buccaneers (6-5) in their Week 13 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals (3-8).

The eight-year NFL quarterback was sidelined for the entire second half after spraining his left shoulder in a devastating 34-7 loss on Nov. 23 against the Los Angeles Rams.
