Premier League round-up: Rodgers double helps Aston Villa beat Leeds

Morgan Rodgers scored twice – including a stunning winner from a free-kick – as Aston Villa came from behind to beat Leeds 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday.

The player has only just returned from international duty with England, where he currently keeps Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham out of the starting line-up.

Rodgers showed exactly why against Leeds, showing superb technique to curl a free-kick over the defensive wall and into the net in the 75th before finishing from Donnell Millen’s cross to equalize in the 48th.

Leeds took the lead at a highly charged Elland Road when Lucas Namcha headed in from close range after Villa defender Ezri Konsa cleared the ball off the goal line following Anton Stich’s header. There was a video review to check whether Villa goalkeeper Amy Martinez was obstructed in the build-up but the goal was allowed.

Dominic Calvert-Lyon thought he would have equalized for Leeds two minutes after Rodgers’ second goal but it was ruled out for handball.

It was Villa’s sixth win in the last seven league games, after the team started the campaign without a win in their first five games. Villa moved to the fourth place.

Promoted Leeds have now lost five of their last six games and have fallen into the relegation zone.

Later, Arsenal host Tottenham in a north London derby and will look to extend their lead over second-placed Chelsea to six points. Manchester City are a point further back in third place.
