Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis: A timeline of the last few months

After months of treatment and limited public appearances, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has announced that she is in remission from cancer.

Since revealing her diagnosis in March, Catherine has carefully chosen her public appearances, each of which has attracted a throng of supporters.

Here’s what we know.

December 25, 2023

Kate’s last official public appearance was on Christmas Day, when she attended a church service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk, England.

She was pictured walking to church with her husband Prince William and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, as they usually do every Christmas. The family coordinated in blue and green.

Just over three weeks later, on January 17, Kensington Palace announced that Kate had been admitted to a London clinic for abdominal surgery. Officials released few details about her health, but said the surgery was successful and her condition was “not cancerous.” He was expected to stay in the hospital for up to two weeks.

A few hours later, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III would be treated for an enlarged prostate.

The next day, William was photographed driving himself from the hospital, where Kate was recovering from abdominal surgery.

Almost two weeks later, Kate returned home to Windsor, not far from London. Kensington Palace officials said she will recuperate at home for two to three months and will not resume her public duties until after Easter in late March.

Unlike her father-in-law, King Charles III, who was photographed leaving a London clinic after the procedure, there were no photos of Kate leaving the clinic.

Buckingham Palace officials announced in early February, just days after Charles underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate, that the king had been diagnosed with cancer.

The palace did not say what form of cancer Charles had, but a palace official said it was not prostate cancer. Doctors discovered the cancer during an earlier procedure.

The public’s thirst for information about Kate’s whereabouts and recovery peaked in the first week of March. It was around this time that TMZ released a grainy paparazzi shot of Kate riding in a car driven by her mother.

It was the first time Kate had been seen since her hospitalisation. Despite the photo circulating online, British newspapers and broadcasters have not republished it, citing Kate’s request for privacy during her recovery – although they did report the sighting.

To mark Mother’s Day in Britain, almost two months after abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace released an official photo of a smiling Kate surrounded by her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis. The palace did not provide many details about the picture other than that it was taken by William last week in Windsor, where the family lives at Adelaide Cottage, in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Although the image was meant to highlight a happy family at the holiday and quell the rumours, it became the subject of intense scrutiny after the Associated Press and several other photo agencies issued a “kill order”, asking their clients to remove it from all platforms out of concern that it manipulated. The New York Times, which initially used the image in the story, also removed it.

Kate took the blame and apologized for the Mother’s Day photo fiasco.

“Like many amateur photographers, I occasionally experiment with editing,” she said. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion caused by the family photo we shared yesterday.”

Kate is known to be fond of photography, and the palace often distributes her photos to the family. Palace officials stressed that Kate made minor changes to what was supposed to be an informal family picture taken by William.

Hours after Kate apologized for editing the photo, she was photographed with William leaving Windsor Castle.

The grainy photo, which has been widely shared online, shows Kate looking away from the camera through a window.

The following week, the couple was seen again. This time in an unverified video, walking outside a grocery store near their home in Windsor. The video, captured by an onlooker, shows the pair carrying bags and wearing comfortable, dark clothes, blending in with the crowd.

Getty Images has provided editorial advice for another royal family photo, this time featuring Queen Elizabeth II alongside her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The photo — taken by Kate at Balmoral Castle in Scotland in August 2022 and released in 2023 on the Queen’s 97th birthday — was “digitally enhanced” before being released, the photo agency said.

In a recorded video broadcast by the BBC, Kate said she had been diagnosed with cancer and had started chemotherapy. She described the past two months as “incredibly difficult for our whole family.”

Like the king, the 42-year-old princess did not specify what kind of cancer it was, but asked the public and the media to respect her desire for privacy, describing her illness as a “big shock”.

She also asked for “time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.” She said that it took time for her and William to explain everything to their children and “reassure them that I will be fine”.

More than a week after Kate announced she had been diagnosed with cancer, she and her family did not attend the Easter service at Windsor Castle. However, Charles made his first significant public appearance since revealing he had cancer. He was photographed with Queen Camilla greeting well-wishers.

She attended a birthday party for her father-in-law, Charles, in mid-June, marking a welcome sign of her improving health. She was photographed smiling as she rode in a carriage with her three children as crowds gathered in central London to catch a glimpse of the event.

Kate’s appearance at the game drew a standing ovation as she took her place in the royal box row. She was also greeted with applause as she walked onto center court to present the trophies when the game ended.

August 25, 2024

Kate was photographed with William as she arrived at Crathie Kirk on the Balmoral estate in Scotland. The couple was joined by other members of the royal family.

September 9, 2024

In the three-minute video, Kate said she was relieved to be done with treatment. “Doing everything I can to stay cancer free is my focus now,” she said. “My road to healing and full recovery is long and I have to take each day as it comes.” The princess said she will have a limited schedule of public events until the end of the year.

January 14, 2025

The princess announced in a post on Instagram that she is in remission from cancer.

“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on my recovery,” Princess Kate wrote. “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis knows, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.”
