Q and A: Canucks’ Jim Ruthford on the rebuild, injury and overall outlook

Rutherford: With a compressed schedule, ginger, we expected it (badly), but we didn’t expect it. A team with many injuries. Maybe not as much as, but you take care of it.

Sports: The loss of the seed was accelerated when the center Philip Chytil and BlueDy BlueGy went to the same game in Washington in Washington on October 19. How big is there no six games?

Rutherford: Well, when we make trades (and the New York Kagerers last season), we are also aware of the risks. Sports: Yes, you concluded after last season that Canucer needed to get a second Real Césé and it would be “”very expensive” not to do it. Do you think in April you are still waiting for that trade in November?

Rutherford: No, I don’t. But it’s not for lack of trying. He calls the team all the time. If it ever becomes a conversation about potentially adding someone else, the price is just too high.

Sports: How high? Like Tom Moirand and Poud Poice Pettersson too?

Rutherford: Hehehe, like that. One of the things that I’ve opened up is, you know, the kind people who are holding here now. I believe our organization is doing a good job in building a pipeline of young players. Are we going to give in now or are we going to keep building? (Until) we are traded jt. . We are on the right track to continue building towards more regular content. And when jt is built, we are set again. No matter what we do, you will never replace him. And then we became a team in redirection. And we are still a team in transition. If you look at our current line, we have six, out of seven years in our line, and it’s difficult. But the positive side is that these guys are developing. So there is a bit of a silver lining in the first quarter of the season.

Sports: What do you do to the roster in the short term?

Rutherford: We can change, pay a heavy price (in fees) and still not be a playoff team. Or we just stay the course, try to be healthy and still have a chance to make the playoffs. But we might as well miss the playoffs doing that, right? We are in a very good year of power, and we must keep it. Now, that being said, I would say we will stay of course and develop our young players and get our best players on track. And then find that center. We know we don’t know what we have because we don’t have a full line yet.

Sports: So you haven’t thought of it as a trade chip like Malerder and Petterson, Jonathan Lkkerimaki and Cotung Braeden?

Rutherford: It was not in the plan. People use different words according to how the team continues. Some people use ‘build.’ Some use word transitions. ‘ You can play it any way you want. ‘Retool.’ But the fact is, we are in the area from which the American predout and the development of protection in Penrik has done a good job, and it will take those who organize it for us. Now, I’m not saying we’re not going to beat any of these players. But if we do, it will be for people who are 25 years old or younger. Even our core, old men are still in their 20s; We are still a regular team. It’s not like we’re an older team that has none.

Sports: The future of Huginn hughes will be a subplot all season. Whether his decision next summer, whether to re-sign with the Canuck

Rutherford: No, I don’t think so. I think as long as we stay the course and keep the younger charge that we feel (in the NHL) and contribute to a consistent playoff team that’s what we’re going to do.

Sports: Quinn told us before the season that he “can make noise” around his condition. But he looked like he had the weight of the universe to him. How do you think he handled this?

Rutherford: First of all, he produced Red that for Victory in a good time, also, because he is right pri and leader and he wants the result. He wants the team to succeed, but more than that. From what I know – whenever I’m around him – it doesn’t seem to bother him. I believe he gave his best. . . help the team. I don’t see it changing that way.

Sports: Your team is 8-9-1. How do you think it gave up the first difficulty?

Rutherford: I think our coaches and our players have handled it very well. We have shown in the Games How we are capable of playing. It’s consistency (which is lacking). We’re probably going to win games people think we’re going to lose and lose games they think they’re going to win. It could be due to some packages or a lot of changes in our line, but have played several games spread for 20 minutes and have not received the first one.

Sports: You are only three points out of a playoff spot, but we know how hard it is to catch up after November. Your crisis stick is with you on a difficult journey. Do you feel the top of this next game is critical to stay in the playft race?

Rutherford: They are all critical, but you are not willing to fall too far. ST Louis did it (came from last place to win the stanley cup in 2019). One year in Pittsburgh, in 2016, we were in a bad place and made a bunch of changes and went on to win Stanley Cup. So I don’t think you should panic if you’re not where you should be at the end of November. You are not automatically out of it. But everything is critical at this point. It got people hurt, it’s still trying to strengthen our ice center. Is that what I’m talking to? Just keep working on things.

Sports: Sorry for the pun, but your pk is killing you, last in the NHL. Is it personnel?

RutherFord: Well, we’ve got two key guys out (Derek) Fourger and Bluey. And so it began. But our laws were not good in the last year, either, and wherever we are good. It should be better. Whether we change how we kill or we get different people in pK, that has to change if we’re going to win.

Sports: Another study that came out first every season last season, Suter Center, left in free agency multi-contract two years worth $4.125 million per Pro. Do you regret not keeping him?

Rutherford: I will mention it to him. He’s the guy we thought we were still in when he went to ST Louis. And I know he wants to be back here. It seems that there are some who know in terms of (based on) what it ends up being. We considered bringing him back (more than two years later), but it didn’t work out.

Sports: How does adam foote work as a rookie head coach?

Rutherford: I think he did a good job. I was well taken care of by him, Komikasiana, his preparation. The start of the season – when he has a job, when he tries to get better with the players and especially the core group. The preparation in practice is one of the things I’m sure you see. And some bright spots that we didn’t do in the past. . . He has a three-by-three game plan, he works when the goal is pulled. Especially with him working with so many new, young men and things like that, I love the work he’s done.

Sports: So what is the best case scenario from here?

Rutherford: The best scenario is that we have our players, we (sticks and priorities we have) that we have six months to get another center, and then see where we are. Take a run at making the playoffs. And if you’re in the playoffs, you never know.

Sports: And if it doesn’t work?

Rutherford: then dropped it remains of course, the way I’m sure, and we miss the playofof. So we want to (draft) the lottery and get a top-five pick and still use a younger team, where most of the players are in their 20s. Just keep adding good players.

Sports: But not rebuild?

Rutherford: rebuilding can work. But you have to understand rebuilding takes time. There has to be a lot of competition, and for the team that has the most power and strength, usually has the first cup. And you still need to get lucky. I’m not a team name, but some have been trying to rebuild and have tons of drafts to make. So rebuilding is not something we want to go for. Like I said, we are in a diversion. But we’re not going to trade all of these players for a draft that may or may not end.

Sports: Even if you want to do a rebuild, will have you?

Rutherford: to this point, I have always followed the freedom to do what I want. Francesco (Aquilandi) has caused so much from day 1, from the moment he met me and picked me up. He hadn’t peeked. He has left it in my hands.
