LOSALE, Qatar — Max Verstappen won the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, sending a tight Formula 1 title battle into next weekend’s final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
Championship leader Lando Norris would have clinched his first F1 title with victory but finished fourth, with his McLaren team and title rival Oscar Pastry second.
He has won seven races this season in all three title contenders. Verstappen is aiming for a fifth straight F1 title, with Piastri and Norris chasing their first.
“It’s a very beautiful race,” Verstappen said on team radio after his 70th career victory. “Great work by all.”
Norris could yet become the first British driver to win the championship in 2020 as Lewis Hamilton won the last of his last seven titles. But after entering the end of Qatar’s PV with a 24-point lead over both his rivals, Norris is now 12 points ahead of Verstappen and 16 clear of Pastry, who dropped to third overall.
“Speechless,” said a sad-voiced Piastre. “I don’t even know the words.”
