HALIFAX – Calgary’s Kayla Skrlik scored the biggest first win of the 2025 Montana Canadian Curling Trials on Sunday.
Scurlock’s rink beat Ottawa’s Rachel Homan, the world’s top-ranked women’s team, 8-7 in overtime. It snapped Homan’s 32-game hitting streak against Canadian teams, a streak that spanned 413 days.
“It’s a really good confidence-building win, I think the best confidence-builder we’ve had,” Scurlock said. “But, it’s still a long week, we can’t just beat Homan and lose the rest of our games. We’re taking it one shot, one game at a time and that really helped, especially against Rachel.”
Skrlik (1-2) broke a 4-4 tie with three points in the ninth end. But Homan (2-1), the reigning Canadian and world champion, tied Scurlock three-for-one in the 10th to force an extra end.
“Getting a three is actually easier than you think in the 10th end when those two wings throw and Rachel is making everything. So, we knew there was a chance we could go to extra,” Scurlock said. “Did I think I was going to have to make a runback to force an extra? Probably not. But, honestly, an extra with a hammer is all we can hope for.”
Halifax’s Christina Black (1-2) also picked up her first win of the Olympic Trials, handing Winnipeg’s Caitlin Laws (2-1) her first loss with a 7-3 decision.
That left Carrie Annerson’s streak, man, as the only undefeated team in the women’s standings. Inerson moved to 3-0 with a 9-1 win over Corinne Brown (1-2) of Kamloops, BC
Selina Stormey (2-1) of Edmonton defeated Kate Cameron of St. Adolph, Maine, 12-5.
Earlier in the day, Homan defeated Black 8-2 in eight ends and Einerson won 6-5 over Cameron, who scored singles in each of the final four ends. Einarson is a four-time Canadian champion who finished runner-up to Homan at this year’s Scotts Tournament of Hearts.
The Laws scored a goal in the 11th end for an 8-7 victory over the Stormy. In other action, Brown defeated Scurlock 7-6.
In men’s action Sunday afternoon, St. John’s, NL’s Brad Gusho and Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone both improved to 2-0. Gusho defeated Calgary’s Kevin Coe (1-1) 5-3 while Dunstone defeated Winnipeg’s Jordan MacDonald (0-2) by a score of 8-4.
In other results, John Epping (1-1) of Sudbury, Ont., beat Mike McEwen (1-1) of Saskatoon 9-5 while defending Canadian champion Brad Jacobs (1-1) scored two goals in the 11th end to beat Saskatoon 6-4.
The winner of the men’s and women’s events will represent Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cretina, Italy.
