It was a fascinating spectacle. The last public event in Washington to bring together many tech bosses in the same room was a 2020 congressional hearing aimed at their companies.
Today, most firms still have serious outstanding issues before the US government, including antitrust lawsuits, investigations, regulatory and tariff fights.
Last week, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Michael Bennett, both Democrats, shared a letter addressed to the executive, which accused them of trying to “comfort up to the incoming Trump administration in an effort to avoid scrutiny, limit regulation and buy favors”.
“Funny they never sent me one of these to donate to the Democrats,” Mr Altman posted on social media in response.
How durable the tech bromance proves and how far Trump will push many of these issues remain open questions.
But the president, who left office the first time as a kind of pariah in the business world, seems to be reveling in his new position.
As he wrote on social media last month: “Everyone wants to be my friend!!!”
Trump’s friendship with tech executives isn’t going well with everyone else in his circle.
Former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon on Sunday called Musk “an evil person”, saying he would be “out of here by Inauguration Day”.
“I see this and I think most people in our movement see this as President Trump breaking the oligarchy, he’s broken and they’re giving in,” Bannon told ABC News.
