The Canadiens signed Mike Matheson to a five-year, $30 million contract extension


The team announced Friday that the defenseman has signed a five-year, $30-million contract extension that runs through the 2030-31 season and removes a $6 million cap hit.

Currently in his fourth season with Montreal, Matheson has four goals and 10 assists in 22 games. The 31-year-old leads the Canadiens in average ice time at 24:50 per game, which ranks 10th in the NHL.

Pointe-Claire, Que. A native of, Mathieson set several career highs with the Canadiens during the 2023-24 season, including assists (51), points (62), power-play goals (5) and power-play points (28). He also matched a personal best with 11 goals this year.

In 649 career NHL games with the Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers, he has recorded a total of 279 points (78 goals and 201 assists).

Drafted 23rd overall by the Panthers in 2012, Matheson was traded by Pittsburgh to Montreal on July 16, 2022, along with a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling.
