The Maple Leafs blew a two-goal lead in a loss to the Capitals

Chechen extended his point streak to 10 games. It was the NHL-best 22nd goal scored by a Washington defenseman. Tom Wilson later added Washington’s 23rd — and his 13th of the season — on an empty net.

The Capitals closed out a 3-1-0 homestand.

Anthony Beauvillier tied it at 2-2 on a one-timer off a feed from Alex Ovechkin with 6:44 left. Connor McMichael picked up an assist on Chichron’s game-winner after Washington’s rally started when he converted another chance late in the second period.

Morgan Reilly and Matthew Kines scored for the Maple Leafs, who dropped to 2-7-0 on the road while coming up empty in the bid for their first back-to-back wins of the season.

Austin Matthews recorded his 742nd career point on Knies’ second-period goal, moving into a tie for fifth on the franchise list. Oliver Ekman-Larsson extended his point streak to eight games with an assist in the rally opener.

Washington’s Logan Thompson scored 19 and Toronto’s Joseph Voll scored 30.

Dylan Strome had his 16th assist on Beauvilliers’ tying goal. He also had a clear goal disallowed just 21 seconds after the referee said they had killed the game before he poked a loose puck across the line.

Maple Leafs: Continue their six-game road trip Saturday at Pittsburgh.

Capitals: Start a four-game road trip Sunday at the New York Islanders.
