In the first five minutes of the game, both sides scored goals due to challenges from the coaches. And for good measure, the Canucks were kept off the scoresheet within the first 60 seconds after the review.
After the first replay, Vancouver’s forward Ivan Keane thought he might have hit a puck on Kings netminder Anton Forsberg. It appeared as if the Canucks finally came millimeters away from opening the scoring, as Forsberg pinned the puck on the inside of the post, most – but not all – of it crossing the goal line.
Review confirmed that the call had no goal on the ice.
That’s where the chaos begins, though.
A little over two minutes later, the Kings drove into Canucks territory, where Andrey Kuzmenko picked Elias Patterson’s pocket before passing it to Trevor Moore behind the net.
Moore didn’t miss on what was then LA’s first shot of the game, scoring his fourth goal of the season.
But Canucks head coach Adam Foote said “not so fast” and sent the referees back to the headset with a challenge for offside. As Moore entered the offensive zone, he lost control of the puck as he and Kuzmenko crossed the blue line, knocking the goal off the scoreboard.
The next challenge came from the Kings’ bench when Vancouver had 15:17 remaining in the opening period.
Aatu Raty deflected a shot from Kevin Hughes past Forsberg for what would be his second goal of the year. But once again, an offside ruling eliminated the team.
Jim Heller called for the challenge when Jonathan Lakermakky entered the zone before Drew O’Connor crossed the blue line with the puck.
Once again, the officials gave no reason to keep things uneventful with five minutes to go before the clock ran out.
“I’ve never seen it,” Canucks play-by-play announcer John Shorthouse said after yet another review.
Although it may have seemed like the game was destined to remain scoreless at that moment, the Kings finally broke even with less than three minutes remaining when Enz Kopiter beat Kevin Lankinen. And he didn’t need a review to make sure it was a good goal.
