The Trump administration on Tuesday ordered that officials overseeing diversity, equity and inclusion across federal agencies be placed on administrative leave and take steps to close the office at 5 pm on Wednesday.
In a memorandum from the Office of Personnel Management, the heads of departments and agencies were ordered to clear these officials by placing all DEI employees on administrative leave, effective immediately, at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, and will work on a reduction plan until the end. the day of January 31.
The memo also directed the agency to remove any language or advertising about the DEI’s actions and to remove any pending documents or guidance that could undermine the new order. He also ordered agency heads to notify DEI officials that their offices will be closed and to ask staff if there are any remaining efforts that remain “hidden” in the coded language. or unclear.
The directive is a quick attempt to implement elements of President Trump’s Day 1 executive order that curtails various federal efforts. In a new executive order on Tuesday, Mr. Trump urged the private sector to follow the federal government’s lead and “end DEI’s illegal discrimination and preferences and comply with all federal laws regarding human rights.” His order also directed the agency to investigate the company’s compliance with those laws.
Although the federal government does not have responsibility for many private sector practices, it does have the discretion to apply its rules to private contractors and subcontractors who are subject to the new rules. In anticipation of Mr. Trump taking office, several companies, from Meta to McDonald’s, have canceled DEI operations.
Tuesday’s ruling said DEI’s policy “undermines our national unity, as it rejects, denigrates, and undermines traditional American values of hard work, excellence, and achievement.” each for a system of illegal, destructive and dehumanizing plunder.”
“But in a tragic case,” the order said, “the American people have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of illegal and harmful discrimination that prioritizes how people are born over what they can do.” “
Within hours of being sworn in, Mr. Trump rescinded several executive orders signed by his predecessor, Joseph R. Biden Jr. supporting underserved communities,” who ordered federal agencies to incorporate sustainability into nearly every policy-making process during his administration.
Mr. Biden has prided himself on putting racial equality at the center of his policies, in areas including the environment, infrastructure, the economy and health care.
The order reverses Mr. Biden’s position that an administration committed to reversing decades of discrimination and neglect in underserved communities is a course correction for the country, not a threat to their future.
The executive action fulfills Mr Trump’s promise to eliminate “radical” policies and “wasteful” spending in a move aimed at fighting systemic inequality, which has angered conservatives who say but embracing diversity betrays racism and racial “love”. Mr. Trump’s order called for the elimination of programs aimed at “diversity,” “equality” and “fair decision making.”
Mr Trump reiterated those calls during his inaugural address to the nation when he took office, vowing to end efforts to “create race and gender in every aspect of public life.” and privacy.”
“We will build a society without color and based on dignity,” Mr. Trump said during the speech.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that the new guidelines should “come as no surprise.”
“President Trump campaigned on ending the epidemic of DEI in the federal government and returning America to a merit-based society that would hire people for their skills, but not because of the color of their skin,” the statement said. “This is another victory for Americans of all races, religions and faiths. Promises made, promises kept.
