The group behind the march is described on its website as holding “intersecting identities” and having “issue-based interests” with causes as diverse as climate change, immigration and women’s rights.
The organizers said they sought to confront Trump by “drawing on past successes and effective strategies against autocrats”.
A small group of Trump supporters were at the Washington Monument on Saturday. Noticing a man in a red hat Make America Great Again, one of the leaders of the People’s March with a megaphone approaching chanting: “No Trump, no KKK.”
One of the men, Timothy Wallis, told the Associated Press news agency his friend had just bought a Trump hat from a street vendor.
Wallis, 58, of Pocatello, Idaho, said the People’s March protesters had “every right” to demonstrate, though he was baffled by the rancor.
“It’s sad where we are as a country,” he said.
