Titans player says Jaguars punter threatened to “beat” him

Nashville, Tenn. – Tennessee Titans running back Julius Chestnut said Jacksonville Jaguars punter Logan Cook said he was going to hit him during Sunday’s game.

Chestnut blocked the kick as punter found Titans returner Chimeri Dyke on a 47-yard return with 14:06 left and a leg to trip it up. The kick was injured and evaluated for a concussion before returning to punt at the end of the Jaguars’ next series.

The Jaguars and Titans tied for second on Deck’s 13-yard punt return with 11:49 remaining, with Chestnut and Cook squaring off.

The officials were stymied and each team was given a pair of unnecessary foul penalties, and kicker and long snapper Ross Metzczak was flagged for the Jags. Titans safety Mike Brown was ejected.

The Jaguars went on to win 25-3. The AFC South teams combined for 184 yards on 23 receptions.

“I was just trying to play hard, and he came up to me and said he was going to beat me,” Chestnut said. “So I don’t know what he did.”

Chestnut said he never got an explanation for why Cook was so mad that he “came at me.”

“It was surprising to me, I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Chestnut said.

Cook was not specifically asked after the game what Chestnut said the punter told him. A message was left Sunday night seeking comment from Jaguar.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Coke said after the loss that he likes to hit people. He said Chestnut got his best in a “really” game.

Cook spoke to the referee at halftime after being pulled from his end zone by a backup long snapper late in the second quarter.

“I may have said some things that sounded rude, so I wanted to clear the air,” Cook said of his interaction with the referee. “I don’t like people to be hostile to me, so let him know the situation and also find out what happened on that play in the end zone.”

Jaguars coach Liam Quinn said he wanted Cook to be careful when it came to his unnecessary flagging, but he was proud of his players for the competition.

“There were some frustrations with them rushing us the way they were with the long snapper issue, and we thought we might have gotten worse or possibly worse at one point,” Quinn said. “I don’t know if it was called or not.”
