The co-main event of UFC 323 ended after just 26 seconds when defending champion Alexander Pantoja sustained a hamstring injury.
Joshua Vaughn is the new 125-pound champion — but it’s not the kind of victory he envisioned.
Vaughan landed just two strikes to six for Pantoja, who suffered a horrific hand injury as he found himself on the canvas when the Brazilian landed a head kick that was caught by Vaughn.
Pantoja, who had won eight in a row, including four straight title defenses, immediately grabbed his arm and signaled that he was injured. The referee stepped in to stop the action.
During the post-fight broadcast, according to cageside reporter Megan Olive via the UFC’s chief medical physician, Pantoja suffered a “susceptible left hip injury”.
All of this means that the Brazilian’s shoulder went back into place after being dislocated. Olivi went on to explain that Pantoja will go for additional imaging in Florida on Monday to further understand the extent of the injury, and the now-former champion was “distraught” at the situation but left the T-Mobile Arena on his feet in front of his family.
The commentary team of Daniel Cormier, Joe Rogan and Jon Ink were surprised by Olivi’s reporting because Pantoja’s injury appeared to be from his left shoulder, which appeared to have been caused by his fall rather than his shoulder. To which Olivier reconfirmed that the UFC told him it was in fact a shoulder injury.
However, Myanmar’s Wan is now the second-youngest champion in UFC history and the first Asian-born men’s champion in the organization’s history.
While the severity of Pantoja’s injury remains unclear, and unless he is out of commission for an extended period of time, an immediate rematch would be the most logical option for Wan’s first title defense.
